Why do we get bored?
Psychologists define boredom as the aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity. The key insight from recent research is that it is functional rather than merely unpleasant: boredom signals that current attention is being wasted, prompting the search for something more rewarding. That makes it an exploratory drive, and studies have found that inducing boredom increases performance on subsequent creative tasks, apparently because an unstimulated mind turns to daydreaming and associative thinking, which is the same default-mode network activity implicated in creative insight.
The modern complication is that boredom is now trivially easy to eliminate, since a phone provides infinite low-effort stimulation on demand. Some researchers argue that constantly medicating boredom this way removes the mind-wandering that produced its benefits, and there is evidence that heavy media multitasking associates with more difficulty sustaining attention, though causation is hard to establish. On the other end, chronic boredom proneness, a trait-level tendency rather than a passing state, correlates with genuinely concerning outcomes including depression, anxiety, substance use, and risk-taking, and it appears in some psychiatric and neurological conditions. So the sensible reading is that occasional boredom is a useful signal worth sitting with rather than instantly extinguishing, while persistent inability to find anything engaging is worth taking seriously.
Boredom is a signal that your attention is unengaged and your current situation is not worth it, essentially a prompt to go find something better. Research suggests it drives exploration and creativity, and that chronic boredom tracks with real risks.
