Why do you forget why you walked into a room?
The phenomenon has been studied and named. Research by Gabriel Radvansky and colleagues found that people were more likely to forget an intention after passing through a doorway than after walking an equivalent distance within a single room, an effect that held both in physical spaces and in virtual environments navigated on a screen. The interpretation is that the mind organizes experience into episodes, and a boundary such as a doorway signals that one episode has ended and another begun, prompting the brain to compress and file the preceding context. Information tied to the old context becomes harder to retrieve on the other side of the boundary.
This connects to a broader model of event segmentation, in which the brain continuously divides continuous experience into discrete units at points of change: a scene shift, a topic change in conversation, a transition between activities. That segmentation is useful, since it is how experience becomes organized memory rather than an undifferentiated stream, and the doorway effect is a small cost of an otherwise valuable system. Later work has found the effect is not always easy to reproduce and is stronger when cognitive load is high or attention is divided, which fits everyday experience: the failure happens when you were thinking about something else on the way.
Two practical consequences. Returning to the room where the intention formed often restores it, which is not superstition but context-dependent retrieval, the same principle behind studying in the room where you will be tested. And saying the intention aloud or holding a related object reduces the failure by giving the memory an additional cue that survives the boundary. Worth stating clearly: this is normal and is not an early sign of dementia. The distinction clinicians draw is between forgetting why you entered a room, which happens to everyone, and forgetting where you are or how you got there, which is a different category and warrants evaluation.
Passing through a doorway appears to trigger a mental event boundary, and the brain files away the previous context. It is called the doorway effect, and it has been demonstrated experimentally rather than just anecdotally.
