Why do we have time zones?

Time zones exist because the Earth is a rotating sphere, so the sun is overhead at different places at different moments, it is midday in New York while it is still early morning in Los Angeles and already evening in London. If everyone set their clocks by their own local sun (so that noon meant the sun at its highest), then every town a few miles east or west would have a slightly different time, which is exactly how it used to work: each community kept its own local solar time, and it hardly mattered when travel was slow. A difference of a few minutes between neighboring towns was irrelevant when the fastest thing around was a horse.

Railroads broke that system. As trains connected distant places and ran on schedules, the chaos of hundreds of local times became a genuine problem, you could not build a coherent timetable when every station kept its own clock, and it caused confusion and dangerous scheduling errors. So in the 1800s, railroad companies and then governments introduced standard time zones: broad north-south bands, each keeping a single uniform time, so that everyone within a zone agrees on the clock even though the sun is not perfectly overhead at noon everywhere in it. The system was formalized internationally in the late 1800s, dividing the globe into roughly 24 zones, each about 15 degrees of longitude wide and typically one hour apart, measured from a prime meridian at Greenwich, England. In practice the zones follow wiggly political borders rather than straight lines, because countries adjust them for convenience, and some places use offbeat half-hour or 45-minute offsets, or, like China, impose a single time zone across a huge width for national unity. So time zones are a human solution, born from railroads and standardized for a connected world, to the natural fact that a spinning planet cannot have noon everywhere at once.
