Why do you need to pee more in cold weather?
The phenomenon has a name, cold diuresis, and a straightforward mechanism. When you get cold, your body constricts the blood vessels near the skin to reduce heat loss, a process called peripheral vasoconstriction. That pushes the same volume of blood into a smaller effective space in the core, raising central blood pressure. The kidneys, which regulate blood pressure partly by controlling fluid volume, respond by filtering out more fluid and producing urine, lowering the pressure back toward normal. The result is a full bladder despite drinking no more than usual.
A second factor compounds it: you also lose less water through sweating in cold weather, so more of your fluid intake is available to be excreted. Cold air is typically dry as well, and you lose moisture through breathing, which is part of why dehydration in winter is more common than people expect, since the thirst signal is weaker in the cold even as fluid losses continue. That combination has real safety implications for cold-weather hiking, skiing, and outdoor work, where people underdrink because they do not feel thirsty and then dehydrate while continuing to urinate frequently. The effect is harmless in ordinary circumstances, and the practical response is to keep drinking in cold weather rather than treating frequent bathroom trips as a sign you have had enough.
It is called cold diuresis. Cold constricts your surface blood vessels to conserve heat, which raises blood pressure in the core, and your kidneys respond by shedding fluid to bring the pressure back down.
