The trap that catches even careful travelers is dynamic currency conversion. When a card terminal or ATM asks whether you want to be charged in US dollars instead of the local currency, always decline and choose local currency. Saying yes lets the merchant's processor do the conversion at a marked-up rate, often several percent worse than what your card network would give, and it is presented as a helpful convenience precisely because most people accept it.
