How often should you wash towels?

The commonly cited guidance from cleaning and dermatology sources is to wash bath towels after roughly three uses, on the condition that they dry fully between uses. A towel that stays damp in a humid bathroom hosts bacteria and mildew far faster, and the sour smell that survives a wash is the signature of that growth. Hand towels get used by everyone and carry whatever the sink did not remove, so every couple of days. Washcloths, gym towels, and anything used on the face or after exercise are single-use before washing. Kitchen towels that touch raw food surfaces should be changed daily.

The habits that matter more than the interval. Hang towels spread out on a bar rather than bunched on a hook so they dry within a few hours, and run the bathroom fan. Wash in warm or hot water with a full detergent dose, and skip fabric softener, which coats fibers and reduces absorbency over time. Dry completely before folding, since a slightly damp towel put away is a musty towel next week.

To rescue towels that already smell, wash them once with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then again with detergent and a half cup of baking soda, and dry fully in the sun or a hot dryer. That strips the residue buildup that traps odor. Sheets follow similar logic and are commonly recommended weekly, more often in hot weather or with pets in the bed, and pillowcases more often than that because of the oils and skin cells they collect against your face.
