How do you get rid of hiccups?
Hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm followed by the vocal cords snapping shut, and nearly every folk cure attacks the same reflex loop: raise carbon dioxide or stimulate the vagus nerve. Holding your breath for 10 to 20 seconds, sipping ice water steadily, breathing into a paper bag briefly, or swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar all have plausible mechanisms and decent anecdotal records. None is proven, because hiccups usually stop on their own, which makes every remedy look brilliant.
Being startled is theater. The methods with the most physiological logic involve controlled breathing and swallowing.
The actual medical line: hiccups lasting more than 48 hours are called persistent, can signal an underlying issue, and deserve a doctor. There are prescription treatments for stubborn cases, so nobody has to live with them.
Most tricks work by disrupting the breathing reflex: hold your breath, sip ice water, or swallow a spoon of sugar. None are guaranteed. Past 48 hours, see a doctor.
