It is the tilt, not the distance, and the distance theory fails spectacularly on inspection: Earth is actually closest to the sun in early January, the dead of northern winter. Surveys of even Ivy League graduates find this misconception thriving, which makes it one of science education's most reliable embarrassments.

Earth's axis leans 23.5 degrees from vertical and keeps pointing the same direction as we orbit. For half the year the Northern Hemisphere tips toward the sun, taking sunlight at a steeper, more concentrated angle for more hours a day: summer. Six months later it tips away, and the same sunlight arrives spread thin and brief: winter. The hemispheres always run opposite, which is why Australians grill in December.

The tilt also gives us the solstices, the extremes of the lean, and the equinoxes, the crossover days of near-equal day and night everywhere.
