How fast is the speed of light, and why does it matter?

Light travels at about 186,282 miles per second, precisely 299,792,458 meters per second in a vacuum, a number so fundamental that the meter is now defined from it rather than the other way around. At that speed, light circles the Earth roughly seven and a half times in one second, crosses from the Moon to Earth in about 1.3 seconds, and takes just over eight minutes to reach us from the Sun. Nothing carrying energy, matter, or information can exceed it, a limit that falls out of relativity rather than being a technological obstacle to overcome.

Two consequences shape how we understand the universe. First, distance becomes time: because light takes time to travel, everything you see is the past. The Sun you see is eight minutes old, the nearest star system over four years old, and galaxies observed by telescopes appear as they were millions or billions of years ago, which is precisely why deep-space telescopes function as time machines for studying the early universe. Second, the limit makes interstellar travel brutally hard, the nearest star is over four light-years away, so even at a substantial fraction of light speed the trip takes many years, and communication with any distant probe carries an unavoidable delay, which is why spacecraft need real autonomy. Light does slow in materials like water and glass, which is what causes refraction and bending, but the vacuum speed remains the universal ceiling.
