What is the difference between RAM and storage?

The desk analogy explains it best. Storage (the hard drive or SSD, measured in gigabytes or terabytes) is like a filing cabinet or bookshelf: it holds everything permanently, your files, photos, apps, and the operating system, whether the device is on or off. RAM (random access memory, measured in a smaller number of gigabytes) is like the surface of your desk: it is the fast working space where the computer keeps whatever you are actively using right now, the apps that are open, the document you are editing, the browser tabs you have loaded. The processor works with things on the desk (RAM) far faster than reaching into the cabinet (storage).

The key differences follow from that. RAM is much faster but temporary, it empties every time you power off, which is why unsaved work vanishes in a crash. Storage is slower but permanent. They are separate components with separate capacities, so a phone with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM is normal, and confusing the two, thinking you are low on memory when you are low on storage, sends people troubleshooting the wrong thing. More RAM lets you run more programs smoothly at once without slowdown; more storage lets you keep more stuff. When a computer feels sluggish with many things open, it often needs more RAM; when it says it is full and cannot save files, it needs more storage. Modern devices increasingly blur the line with fast SSDs, but the fundamental split, fast temporary workspace versus slow permanent shelf, still governs how they perform.
